When the body becomes less sensitive to insulin, it needs to produce more insulin to keep blood sugar stable.  This can lead to Diabetes, Type 2.  Unfortunately Diabetes is associated with many disorders including heart disease. One night of sleep deprivation and six months of a High-Fat diet both decrease insulin sensitivity.  Sleep deprivation decreased insulin sensitivity by 33% and a high fat diet decreased it by 21%.  Sleep deprivation can also lead to increased food intake and overall increased risk of metabolic diseases.
Along with a healthy diet and exercise program, getting enough sleep is important in maintaining our health.
