Breast Exams No Longer Recommended

American Caner Soceity now recommends:

  1. Women with average risk of breast cancer (no personal history of breast cancer or know risk factors based on genetic mutations, family history or other medical problems) should start screening mammograms at 45 instead of 40, and continue doing yearly until the age of 54.  At 55 start every other year as long as the woman is healthy and likely to live another 10 years
  2. Clinical breast exams are no longer recommended if the patient has no symptoms or observed abnormalities.
  3. Women should have the opportunity to continue screening mammograms between the ages of 40-45 and yearly after the age of 55 if the so desire.

Discuss these new recommendations with your health care provider to see what is right for you.
